With the felt need of expanding in the areas of geospatial data policy, GIO are expected to find out the gaps in data and bridge these gaps through creating, correcting and gathering necessary information, which will lead to finding out relevant solutions to the emerged issuesbased on geospatial technology. In these two years at IIT Bombay, focus will be on creating their excellence and inculcating the spatial and spatio-temporal thinking within GIO’s. Also, they are expected to take-up relevant electives which will aid to develop their ability to maintain and make use of geospatial data at respective departments.

1. What is a Geospatial Information Officer (GIO) Fellowship?

GIO fellowship is an interdisciplinary flagship program for Master’s students from all
departments/centers at IIT Bombay in accordance with their interest in Geospatial
science, technology, and its application. The GIO fellowship follows the pattern of 2+1 years: fellows will receive a fixed amount of stipend for 2 years of their studies at IIT-B and one year of on-job stipend at a government agency or industry following their completion of the Master’s programme.
2. Who is eligible to apply for the Geospatial Information Officer (GIO) Fellowship?
Master’s students joining any department/center at IIT Bombay (in the first semester only) are eligible for the fellowship. Those who are interested in geospatial science, technology, and its application are encouraged to apply.
3. Where can a student apply for the Geospatial Information Officer (GIO)
Fellowship?
The call for fellowship applications will be sent to the departments/centers by the GISE Hub, and the Head of the department/center will share this information with all the faculty. Interested students should express their interest and must be nominated by faculty members who are potential mentor for the fellowship duration to be considered for the fellowship.
4. What is the selection process?
Interested students should provide their names to the respective faculty in the department/centers, and the head will then share the list of nominated students with the GISE Hub.
